Johnson, Jr. was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant, Armor, following graduation from the Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia, in January 1990. In June 1990, after completing the Armor Officer’s Basic Course at Fort Knox, Kentucky, he was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 34th Armor Regiment, 1st Infantry Division (Mechanized), Fort Riley, Kansas, where he served as a Tank Platoon Leader and Company Executive Officer including a combat tour in support of Operation Desert Shield/Storm. After completing the Armor Officer’s Advanced Course in June 1994, he was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 72nd Armor Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division (Mechanized), Camp Casey, Korea, where he served as the Battalion Maintenance Officer. In September 1995, he was assigned to the 2nd Brigade, 24th Infantry Division (Mechanized) – reflagged to the 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized) – Fort Stewart, Georgia, where he served as an Assistant Brigade Operations Officer and later as Commander, Company D, 4th Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment. From July 1998 to June 2000 he served as a Company/Team Observer/Controller at the Combat Maneuver Training Center, Hohenfels, Germany. In June 2001, after graduating from the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, he was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas, where he served as the Battalion Operations Officer and later as the Battalion Executive Officer including a combat tour in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. From July 2003 to June 2006 he was assigned to the Army Human Resources Command, Alexandria, Virginia, where he served as the Sustainment Team Chief, Task Force Stabilization and later as the Majors and Lieutenant Colonels Career Manager, Armor Branch. From June 2006 to March 2009 he commanded the 4th Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia, including a 14 month combat tour in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In June 2010, after graduating from the National War College at Fort McNair, Washington, D.C., he was assigned to the Maneuver Center of Excellence, Fort Benning, Georgia where he served as Chief, Commanding General’s Initiatives Group. From January 2011 to May 2013 he commanded the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division. During his command tour the brigade was the first to conduct a Decisive Action Training Environment Rotation at the National Training Center, Fort Irwin California, and also the first to complete a nine month deployment to Kuwait in support of Operation Spartan Shield - setting the conditions for follow on deployments. From September 2013 to Mar 2014 he served as a Chief of Staff of the Army Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. From June 2014 to May 2015 he served as the Executive Officer to the Commanding General, United States Army Pacific. Brigadier General Johnson is currently serving as the Executive Officer, Deputy Chief of Staff, G-8, Headquarters, Department of the Army.

Brigadier General Johnson holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Management from Upper Iowa University; a Master of Science degree in Administration from Central Michigan University; and a Master of Science in National Security and Strategic Studies from the National War College.

Brigadier General Johnson is happily married to his childhood sweetheart, they have two children.
