Brigadier General Timothy J. Edens

Brig. Gen. Tim Edens entered the Army in 1981, graduating from the United States Military Academy. After graduating from the Armor Officers Basic Course and Army Flight School, he was assigned to A Company, 1st Aviation Battalion at Fort Riley, Kan., as a section leader, supply officer, and Attack Platoon Leader. Following the Aviation Officer Advanced Course, Brig. Gen. Edens was assigned to the 4th Brigade, 1st Armored Division at Katterbach, Germany, and served on the Brigade staff as Assistant S3-Air, and Operations and Plans Officer. Following his assignment to the brigade staff, Brig. Gen. Edens commanded C Troop, 1-1 Cavalry, 1st Armored Division.

Following command, he attended the Army’s Systems Automation Course at Fort Gordon, Ga., with follow-on assignment to Headquarters, 4th Army at Fort Sheridan, Ill., serving as an information management staff officer. When the headquarters moved to Ft. McPherson, Ga., and reflagged as the U.S. Army Reserve Command, he was reassigned to J6, U.S. Atlantic Command, Norfolk, Va., as the Tactical Radar Surveillance Specialist responsible for various U.S. and NATO C4I projects. In 1993, Brig. Gen. Edens served as the Squadron S3 for the 4-9 Cavalry, 6th Infantry Division (Light), Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

Following the Command and General Staff College in 1995, Brig. Gen. Edens served as the Battalion S3 for 3-101 Aviation and the 101st Aviation Brigade at Fort Campbell, Ky. Brig. Gen. Edens’ next assignment was to the J6, US European Command in Vaihingen (Stuttgart), Germany, serving as a C4I Systems Plans Officer and the Directorate Executive Officer.

Brig. Gen. Edens assumed command of 6th Squadron, 6th Cavalry in Illesheim, Germany, in February 2000 under the 11th Regiment (Attack), V Corps. On June 6, 2001, he folded the colors of 6-6 Cavalry as an “Alpha-Model” Apache unit, moved the squadron to Fort Hood, Texas, and activated and led the unit through the AH-64D Longbow Unit Fielding and Training Program to prepare 6-6 Cavalry as the first AH-64D Longbow unit to be deployed in Europe.

Following Squadron Command, Brig. Gen. Edens was selected for the Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, Pa. Graduating in June 2003, he was assigned to the War College Staff as the Chief Knowledge Officer under the Deputy Commandant, U.S. Army War College. From July 2004 to June 2005, he served as the Deputy Chief, Operations Division, G3, U.S. Army Europe.

Brig. Gen. Edens assumed command of 4th Brigade, 1st Infantry Division in June 2005. On Aug. 7, 2006, Brig. Gen. Edens folded the 4th Brigade, 1ID colors and unfurled the colors of the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade as the only “transformed” combat aviation brigade (heavy) now deployed under U.S. Army Europe.

In July 2007, he deployed the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade (minus 3-159 ARB) as TF XII to Balad as the Multi-National Corps-Iraq (MNC-I) Combat Aviation Brigade. As of Oct. 5, 2008, the Brigade successfully completed 15 months of combat operations and returned to Katterbach/Illesheim. Following command, Brig. Gen. Edens served in the G3, Operations Staff for U.S. Army Europe.

From July 2009 to May 2010, Brig. Gen. Edens performed duties as the Chief of Staff, U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence, Fort Rucker, Ala. He continued his service at Ft. Rucker as the Deputy Commander of the Army Aviation Center of Excellence until June 2010.

Brig. Gen. Edens will take over as the Assistant Division Commander for Support of Second Infantry Division in the Republic of Korea in July 2011. His awards and decorations include Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, GWOT Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Combat Aviation Badge, the Air Assault Badge, the Parachutist Badge, and Master Army Aviator Badge.
