Command Sergeant Major Phil K. Barretto

Command Sergeant Major Barretto is a native of Hawaii. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in October 1991. CSM Barretto attended basic training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Benning, Georgia, where he was trained as an Infantryman (11B). He is currently assigned as the 2nd Infantry Division/ROK-U.S. Combined Division Command Sergeant Major.

Command Sergeant Major Barretto’s previous assignments include: Team Leader in the 10th Mountain Division (Light), Fort Drum, NY; Pathfinder Team Leader in the Pathfinder Infantry Regiment, Fort Rucker, AL; Operations NCO at Camp Coiner, Korea; Squad Leader in the 25th Infantry Division (Light), Schofield Barracks, HI; Team Leader/Test NCOIC in the 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, NC; Operations SGM in the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, KY; Battalion Command Sergeant Major in the 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Benning, GA, and most recently, Commandant, Noncommissioned Officer Academy, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, NY. Command Sergeant Major Barretto has completed combat tours in Somalia in support of Operation Restore Hope, Honduras, Haiti in support of Operation Uphold Democracy, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, and Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Command Sergeant Major Barretto’s military and civilian education includes: Battalion & Brigade Pre-Command Course, Commandant’s Pre-Command Course, Army Force Management Course, Senior Legal Advisory Course, all levels of NCOPDS to include graduate of USASMA Class 61, Anti-Terrorism Advisory Course, Equal Opportunity Leaders Course, and Rappel Master Course. He holds an Associate’s Degree in Supervisory Leadership from Hawaii Pacific University and a Bachelor of Arts Degree Liberal Arts with Excelsior College. CSM Barretto also holds a Certification in Homeland Defense Security, and is currently pursuing his Master’s Degree in Leadership and Management with the University of Texas-El Paso.

Command Sergeant Major Barretto’s awards and decorations include: Legion of Merit, Bronze Star (2 OLC), Meritorious Service Medal (2 OLC), Army Commendation Medal (2 OLC), Army Achievement Medal (4 OLC), Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Valorous Unit Award, Meritorious Unit Commendation (2 OLC), United Nations Somalia Medal, the Combat Infantryman’s Badge (1 star), Expert Infantryman’s Badge, Pathfinder Badge, Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, and is a member of the Sergeant Audie Murphy Club.

Command Sergeant Major Barretto has been married for 25 years and has three sons and two daughters.

Command Sergeant Major Barretto assumed responsibility of the 2nd Infantry Division / ROK-U.S. Combined Division Dec. 1, 2017.
