No Loss of Life
No loss of life to preventable accidents is the general goal for the Safety program in the Army. This principle is realized through various means both on-duty and off-duty.
Training
Off-Duty Oversight
During duty hours leaders provide direct oversight of their Troops, while deployed to a war zone buddies take care of each other. Once off duty, Service Members loose the oversight of their military family. A large part of the off-duty programs are designed to counter this, either by enlisting service members (Under the Oak Tree Counseling) or members of the community (Operation Guardian Angel).
The Army Safety Program
2nd Infantry Division's Safety Program is built around the Army's Safety Program. Its components are neatly organized on the Army Safety Center's web site, into three ‘Corners’: Soldier's, Leader's and Family Corners.
- Leader's Corner
Leaders: learn how to keep your soldiers safe.
- Soldiers's Corner
Soldiers: learn how to mitigate risk, and how to keep yourself and your battle buddy safe.
- Family Corner
Family Members: learn how to protect your soldier and your family.

Safety Campaigns
These campaigns are designed to "set the conditions" for safety at the beginning of each season, by forewarning everyone of the identified seasonal safety hazards. They are comprehensive in nature. The campaigns are broken down into risks, broken down into steps for mitigating them.
All risks are based on strong statistical indicators.
The Army Safety Center's seasonal campaigns form the core of the 2nd Infantry Division's, while seasonal safety concerns specific to the Division are addressed with Safety Flashes, issued by the Safety Office.
Safety Messages
Because the most important part of preventing risks is to know what they are, "Point" messages addressed directly to every service member on the peninsula are occasionally sent from the USFK and 2ID Commanding Generals' to issue warnings of the latent dangers of an event that has occurred or is about to occur.
The messages are addressed to everyone to maximize the awareness of the risk as quickly as possible. At the moment the message is released they can be disseminated immediately through every available channel.
Under the Oak Tree Counseling
Under the Oak Tree Counseling is a concept that was first developed by USAREUR during their Winter 2004-2005 Safety Campaign, and has since garnered interest throughout the Army community for its simplicity and effectiveness.
Before periods of high-risk, such as weekends, holidays, passes, and leaves, first-line leaders meet with their subordinates to discuss their destinations, travel arrangements and activities. They identify the potential safety risks involved and agree upon a plan to mitigate them. Should any subordinate decide to deviate from the plan, knowingly placing themselves in risky situations, they become liable to punishment for disobeying orders.
The form used for the counseling is the “Meeting Under The Oak Tree” Contract.
