Newcomer Guidance
Bringing Your Family
- Incoming Soldiers
What we need to know to prepare you for your assignment.
At the request of General Sharp, Commander of United States Forces Korea, the Department of Defense approved Command Sponsorship for two new locations and an increase in tour lengths for accompanied service members permanently assigned to Korea. Accompanied tours for camps in Uijeongbu and Dongducheon (Camp Red Cloud, Camp Stanley, Camp Jackson and Camp Casey / Hovey Complex) will increase to 24 months.
For more detailed information see the Command Sponsorship topic.
Bringing Your Pets
- Incoming Soldiers
The 106th Medical Detachment offer Veterinary Services to those PCSing with Pets.
Transporting your pet(s) into and out of the country is at your own expense. MWR boarding facilities are available at Yongsan and Osan Air Base. On or off-post housing is generally cramped with either no or limited outdoor access. Pets are not allowed in the Hannam Village in Seoul.
Sponsorship
- Incoming Soldiers
How we want to assist you with an active sponsor.
Sponsorship is important in the Warrior Division and Commanders' at unit levels are responsible for an active program and trained sponsors. It's vital for us to let you and your family know what to expect prior to arriving in Korea to meet your needs to make informed decisions. We have a responsibility to manage expectations and although South Korea is a modern, 21st Century society with a rich and welcoming culture and people, your sponsor is the key to your integration.
The Brigade S1 of the unit you are going to be assigned to is vital to a smooth transitiion and integration. Look on your orders to see what Brigade or Camp you are assigned to and contact their S1 team, if you haven't already been contacted by your sponsor or someone in the unit.

How to Pack
- Incoming Soldiers
It is highly suggested that Soldiers bring the following:
- Alarm clock (Our facilities contain electrical outlets for 110Vs same as the US.)
- Uniforms (ACUs/BDUs, IPFUs)
- Civilian attire
- Running shoes
- Personal hygiene kit
If Soldiers are arriving after October, Soldiers must bring their full Improved Physical Fitness Uniform (including gloves and skull cap) and the appropriate winter attire (field jacket or Gortex jacket) in order to accommodate the cold weather. It gets very cold in Korea.
All servicemembers are processed through customs and initial personnel matters at the airport. To make this process easier for soldiers, it is recommended that they hand-carry their 201 file, dental records, leave form and at least 15 copies of their PCS orders.
For smooth processing through the immigration authorities, civilian employees should have a valid multiple entry visa issued by the Korean embassy or consulate. The visa is normally obtained upon presentation of PCS orders to the visa issuing office. Many civilian employees also obtain official passports and the visa may be stamped in it. However, it's often preferrable to get it stamped in the tourist passport. Should the employee or dependents not be able to obtain a multiple entry visa prior to departure, contact the servicing personnel office upon arrival in Korea.

When You Arrive
- Incoming Soldiers
At Incheon Airport you and your family must go to the 1st Replacement Center (1RC) desk located in arrival terminal at the end of the west wing, through exit 14, where Army Representatives will assist you.
You and your family will take the 1RC provided bus to USAG-Yongsan where you will begin inprocessing and stay at the world class Dragon Hill Lodge.
Things to Remember
The 1st Replacement Center (1RC) desk at the airport will help you find transportation, provide hotel information and make phone calls.
Most military flights touch down in the Republic during daylight hours. Military and family members authorized civilian flights usually arrive in the evening.
Do not trust Taxi drivers that tell you that buses are not available.
The buses are spacious and comfortable, which can be important after a long flight. The trip will take approximately 1 hour.
In-Processing and Settling in Families
- Incoming Soldiers
| Position | Phone | Commercial |
|---|---|---|
| 1RC Liason | 732-5978 | +011-82-505-732-5978 |
You will spend one night in Dragon Hill Lodge. The following morning you will report to 1RC for mandatory briefings. 2nd Infantry Division Soldiers will then be identified, separated, and depending on your category, transported via bus to the Warrior Readiness Center (WRC) or will be transported to their Area, released to secure housing, and then sent to WRC. Soldiers arriving with families will be linked with either their sponsor or a unit representative as the priority remains to ensure adequate housing and to settle families prior to soldier completing in-processing.
Accompanied with Family
If you are arriving with Families and assigned to an Area I unit, you will be transported to the WRC from 1RC and received by your unit sponsor to begin house-hunting. If you are arriving with Families and assigned to 2CAB (Area II or III) or authorized for families to reside in Area II, mainly reserved for Key Billet or previously authorized personnel, you will be released to your unit sponsor to secure government quarters or off-post housing.
After housing is secured you will be transported to WRC to complete in-processing.
For more information about securing an Accompanied Tour see the Command Sponsorship topic and for more information about touring with Families in Korea, see the Families topic.
Unaccompanied
Unaccompanied Soldiers will be transported to WRC to complete in-processing, after which they will be released to their units to secure permanent lodging.
