2nd Infantry Division-ROK/US Combined Division Medal of Honor Recipients

Since World War I, 40 Warriors from the 2nd Infantry Division have received our nation’s highest award, the Medal of Honor. The first 14 recipients are those Warriors who received the Medal of Honor for their service in WWI. During WWI the 4th Infantry Brigade was made up of two Marine regiments, and one Marine battalion. Six Marines were awarded the Medal of Honor, and by virtue of the fact that they were serving in an Army division, they received both the Army and the Navy medals. There were no organic medical units in the Marine Corps. They relied on Navy physicians, and corpsmen. Six Navy medical personnel, including two dentists, were awarded the Medal of Honor while attached to Marine units serving with the U.S. Army's 2nd Infantry Division.

The next six citations represent those who were recognized for their service in WWII. Four of these six awards were earned during the Battle of the Bulge.

During the Korean War, 20 Warriors received the Medal of Honor. The 2nd Infantry Division lost more Soldiers as casualties in the Korean War than in both WWI and WWII combined, similarly, the number of Medal of Honor recipients from the Korean War is equal the combined total from both World Wars!
